CHARLES LINDBERGH'S HOME TO BE BULLDOZED

The last home of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, near Hana, Maui, is scheduled to be demolished by the National Park Service on or about August 8, 2008. The Argonauta Project, a non-profit organization that has been working to restore and preserve the home, is seeking support in order to extend their contract with the Park Service to complete the restoration.

"The foundation and walls have already been completed," stated Greg Marshall, Project Chairman, "and we finally have funds and a contractor ready to proceed immediately to complete the restoration of this architecturally unique and historic home. However, for reasons we cannot determine, the new Park Superintendent, Marilyn Parris, is blocking our contractor from the site and has stated in a television interview that the structure will be torn down."

The Project was started with the support of U.S. Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka Hawaii, Governors Benjamin Cayatano and Linda Lingle, and dozens of aviators, historians, and preservationists. One of the Argonauta Project’s foremost supporters is Donald Reeser, the former Superintendent of Haleakala National Park, who aided Marshall in the ten-year process of permits, environmental assessments and legal issues. Marshall went on to state, "We can complete the project in just a few months, at which point we will donate the home to the National Park Service. The Park Service needs buildings at their visitor center, and with their current budget constraints we simply don’t understand why the new superintendent is opposed to receiving this unique structure free of charge for their use."

The home is located near remote Hana, Maui, where Lindbergh died in 1974. His grave is in a small cemetery a half mile from the home.
